Yesterday I touched breifly on lunch with an article about muffins. Today I'd like to get into it a bit more. How many of people work outside the home and buy lunch out? Fast food anyone? McDonald's and related chains have made billions, literally, off of the American need for convenience. And the prices just keep going higher.
The least expensive meal I found at McDonald's last week was 2 double cheeseburgers and a medium soda for ~$3.50 after tax. Multiply that by the 20 days most people work in a month and you've got $70 right there! And this is the cheapest option I've found. Most places and even other alternatives at the same place, cost more than this.
So consider packing a lunch. Well, when do we have time? Anyone? Convenience is what fast food chains have made their specialty. How about the weekend? John over at the Mighty Bargain Hunter talks about just this. He and his wife are packing 5 lunches at once then using them during the week.
He did express concern over whether or not the sandwiches would keep but they seem to have held up well for him. Your results may vary depending on the sandwich item you choose but so long as it stays refrigerated, most things will keep well.
Over at Families.com, Traci Anderson mentions it as well. She gives alternatives to common snacks you find at the grocery store that you can cook up right at home. I love her home-made fruit roll-up idea. Great for kids!
And even if you do stick to fast food, consider saving yourself some cash, and calories, by choosing something just a little different next time. Dumb Little Man says that if you choose a different sauce and smaller fries next time, you could save 345 calories! And of course, smaller fries cost less.
Time for my lunch now! Bye

I usually have leftovers from the previous night's dinner. For those days when we have no leftovers, I keep a few frozen 29 cent burritos in the freezer. My fellow employees eat out at least 4 times per week. It makes me cringe to think of how much money they spend on meals since they go to 'sit down' restaurants 85% of the time. I only go out on birthdays with my department. The company pays for this and it is a very nice treat! Thank you for visiting my blog, Kali |

I pack my lunch in the evening when I get home, I'm in the kitchen prepping dinner anyway, so it's only a few extra minutes. I pack tuna & crackers, chicken salad & crackers, cereal & milk, Lean Cuisines, sandwiches, soup, salad, cottage cheese w/fruit, or yogurt. Pretty much whatever I have laying around and looks interesting that day. I try to keep it creative and change it up so I don't get bored with the same old thing. |

That makes alot of sense and I'll have to try it tonight. I'm not working myself (I have no car, hard to get a job without a car in a town without public transport) but my roommate does and he's trying to get away from fast food. I can pack his while I cook tonight.
Thanks! |
