Valorie over at Families.com posted about making Apple Butter yesterday which got me to thinking about those vacation trips and what do you eat on them? I mentioned earlier this week that buying food before you leave is alot less expensive than buying it while you're on the trip. Kids tend to enjoy fast food more though.
It's a bit of a problem - balancing a happy family against nutrition and fiscal concerns. Let alone time. When do you have time to make these things? I went looking for a book to help. (We all know by now how much I really love books right?)
I found "1001 Snacks: For Instant Gratification", a hardcover book by Gregg Gillespie. The second chapter is quck snacks and over 120 pages long, easily the longest chapter in the book. And starting at $2.00, this one went on my wishlist and my kids are out of the house already!

Earlier today I talked about alternative choices to busy, expensive vacations like Disney. Thing is though? The kids like Disney and all its bells and whistles and the things they get for the money you spend. They do have fun, I have to hand Disney that. So what can you do on a slower vacation? Well, spending time with them comes to mind!
If you need a hand figuring out what to do with your kids, and it's kind of depressing how many of us do in our busy, working lives, try this: "The Family Manager's Guide To Summer Survival: Make the Most of Summer Vacation with Fun Family Activities, Games, and More!" by Kathy Peel. She can help you make it a summer to remember.

Continuing my series this week on less expensive vacations for the summer, I ran across a cool blog and this post about spending less by slowing down. He commented, "The real commodity, in travel as in life, is not money, but time. And there is an inverse relationship between the two - spend more of the second and you will spend less of the first."
I'd like to add, you'll enjoy it alot more, too. Taking time to smell the flowers sounds like cliche until you've gone so fast you haven't enjoyed anything in weeks.
So instead of trying to take the kids to Disney, with all it's expense and frenetic activity, why not go to Callaway Gardens instead?
They have a Butterfly Center you need to see to believe and that kids would love! I know Callaway isn't the cheapest vacation ever, but it's whole dimensions of savings over Disney, in both money, time and enjoyment!
So when you're thinking about places your family might visit this summer, look around and take some time to make the decision - and to enjoy the vacation

Buying snacks at the gas station on my trips is my worst habit. It costs so much less to buy them at Walmart or a grocery store before I leave and I end up with better food to boot! Trailmix is one of my favorites, soda by the case and I've saved 10-15 dollars already! Thanks, Trent!
