Social Security Part the Next

I got a phone call from what I assume is my case worker late last week. That isn't what she called herself, she didn't give me a title. But she said she was handling my case so I'll assume that's what she is.

She confirmed I hadn't had care for my condition for over two years and I'd need to be evaluated. I asked where that might be and she said it was all handled by a different department who sets up the appointment for me with a private practitioner.

She said they try to get it as close to where applicants live as possible but that I'd have no choice in where they sent me. I'm concerned it might be a large city, the nearest metorpolis being Atlanta at over 2 hours away. So I inquired if I could reschedule if I couldn't get transportation as they don't supply it. Nope, probably not. This could be interesting.

She mentioned yet more paperwork coming in the mail soon that I'd need to complete and return as soon as possible.

I should have written down her name...

Social Security Step 3

Step 1 was calling a lawyer.

Step 2 was the phone interview.

Step 3 is checking for errors. Friday afternoon I got mail from their office with the information I'd given asking me to check for errors and contact them within 10 days. It didn't say 10 from when but 10 days from the phone interview is Monday. That's not even enough time to call a lawyer in many cases.

And there are errors. Alot of them, mostly in the misspelling of names. It looks like the kind of errors you get from voice recognition software, too.

First thing Monday morning, call and correct.

Applying to SSI

I slept badly last night, knowing this phone call was coming. It wasn't too bad, really. I made the mistake of mentioning I'd already contacted a lawyer and the gentleman interviewing me seemed to feel this was a bad idea. I don't know this system. The lawyer won't charge me unless I win. Yeah, I have a lawyer. They take a considerable chunk (25%) of any initial settlement I get from SSI if I eventually win which is acceptable. 75% of anything is more than I have now.

He kept making disparaging remarks however, when telling me what I needed to do for the process. He said don't be discouraged if I'm turned down as there's an appeals process I can go through. I replied that I expected to be rejected the first time as my research had shown that something like 70% of first time applicants are turned away. He tried to contradict this with a nebulous remark about how he's seen alot of people turned down and alot accepted.

Well, it's done now. My paperwork is in, my permission forms go out in tomorrow's mail and then it's a 3-5 month wait.
